Except US then went to one of the stingiest meal window offerings. I think at one stage they only offered meals if flights were more than 3.5hrs or something absurd. My wife flew cross country in F (RIC-SAN via CLT and PHX, IIRC) and ended up mealless the entire way with no time to grab anything during the connections, this was in the late 2000s.
