My guess is that UA is waiting for Boeing to formally launch/offer the
NMA (aka 797), rumored to be at the June air show in France. Then UA can negotiate for a large order of 777Xs and 797s. I too believe the A350 will be cancelled -- maybe in exchange for some number of A320neos and/or A321neos.
