Thoughts on Ponce?

Hi - I've always been a bit intrigued by Ponce, given that it apparently has a beautiful colonial core but a rather low tourist profile. I was on a recent JetBlue flight and, perusing their route map, I realized they've got a nonstop from JFK. I've started musing about a solo trip down there for a few days, maybe in the spring.

Anyone know the town, and whether it would be worth a short visit? I'm more interested in exploring the historic/urban aspect of the place than I am a traditional beach vacation (although I wouldn't say no to spending a few hours walking around a pleasant, quiet beach). My interests skew more toward wandering around the historic core, checking out the museums, browsing some antique shops, reading a book in a nice cafe, trying out some good local restaurants. I'm a fluent Spanish speaker.

Thanks!
