It varies by property. Some Marriotts also will offer better rooms for an upcharge. I think it's less widely available than it was under the SPG program though.
The issue I would have Marriott vs. Hilton is that if you transfer to Hilton, you have to stay in a Hilton, and there's not nearly so many of those I would want to stay in.
