If you arrive at the airport with an onward ticket, I don't see what will be confusing about it. You don't need to explain that you just arrived from MEL, all you need to show is your onward ticket to MEL.
NAN has an international transit lounge, so there is no requirement to enter Fiji. I'd simply follow the international transit signs, go through security (I think?), and go to my gate.
If you can't get your return ticket at MEL or with OLCI, then I can see it being problematic, it's worth checking to see if VA have a check-in agent in the secure area I guess. But with a ticket, should be easy.
soounds like you haven't been to NAN. Signs to int transit lounge ? Security ?
