222-223 is BNA (Nashville)

Is there any logical reason why for BA metal, long haul odd numbers are LHR-XXX but for short haul, the odd numbered flight seems to be XXX-LHR?

eg BA223 is London to Nashville, 222 the return.
BA500 is London to Lisbon, 501 the return.
