This is correct. My statement date was mid December, I spent $20k late December (not close to statement date), and I spent $20k early January (not close to statement date). I only received 8 night credit, not 16. It's very clear to me that they go by the spend date (or the date the charge comes in which might be one or two days later. Not the statement date.
Since this is most likely automated, I would be very surprised if the way they handled my account was different than the way they handled other accounts.
