Tepotzlán, with El Tepozteco in the background. 18 km / 11 miles east of Cuernavaca, Tepotzlán is a lovely colonial style village inhabited by native people, some of who still speak Nahuatl and adhere to traditional practices, and by weekend home owners from CDMX.

El Tepozteco is claimable by able bodied people as a steep hike. There is an atprchseological site at the top that was built to honor a god in the Nahuatl - Aztec pantheon, Tepoztecatl, god of pulque, an undistilled fermented beverage made from Agave century plants. (The Spaniards brought the Arab-invented still, and instead of pulque, invented and distilled tequila and mezcal.) The view from the top of El Tepozteco is spectacular. There are very good lodgings and restaurants in Tepoztlán. (The name is Nahuatl and means “place of abundant copper”.)
