Flying USA to Perth or Adelaide via Asia is quite sensible. There are no direct flights from the US to either city, so you have to connect. The Asia connection usually makes the trip longer (it depends on where in the USA you are coming from), but the connecting experience is better than at SYD/BNE, and sometimes you can make a single connection journey via places like NYC which require a double connection if you take a routing with a direct USA-Oz leg.

I would recommend SIN or HKG as the preferred connecting airport, and staying on SQ or CX respectively for the entire journey if you can.
