I did not notice any difference between Platinum and Spire with IHG. I would not chase the status per se. Plus, if you want, you can buy ambassador membership post March and you will get platinum status for 200 USD ( assuming no credit card is awailable for you). Marriott' suite upgrade frequency has declined for me post August, but other benefits are very consistent.
