In most cases it is the year in which the benefit is earned that counts and not the actual year it was chosen. So if you choose the elite nites earned in 2018, in January 2019, they would apply to your 2018 status and not 2019. SNAs earned are good through the following year, regardless when chosen. It does appear there is an exception with the free-night award in that it's expiration date is dependent upon when you choose it. These inconsistencies are what drive everyone crazy knowing what applies where. And it doesn't help any at all when they pull the plug on making the selection earlier than declared and everyone starts to scramble.
