Usually, A-B is less than A-xB-C, and B-C is less than A-xB-C, and A-C is less than A-xB-C.
With mixed-cabin tickets it A-B-C can end up costing less than A-B.
Example:
JFK-HKG in First Class: 125,000 AM
JFK-HKG in First Class, HKG-SYD in Business: ~107,000 AM
