For anyone interested, they said award redemptions were still possible, though only over the phone and after booking the desired rental with cash while logged in. Seems like the back end system is functional, otherwise they wouldn't be able to track anything.
They said the system issue made some accounts inactive, so that probably explains why new rentals aren't posting either.
Interesting. So this issue isn't dependent on the level of Gold status. I suppose I can count on my lucky stars that my account wasn't affected. Hopefully all will be back to normal in a few days.
