If AA opens up award space, it should be doable. If you are not EXP and hence subject to award fees, there could be a fee; i think it depends if you have any AA flights in there now, but I'm sure there's a forum with the detailed rules for that.

Yes, it's super annoying. Better to use EF and set alerts for the specific legs you are willing to take.
