Your post could be interpreted that you could get 5 star hotels (St. Regis, etc) in NYC for $200. I read it as either staying in NYC/London/etc OR staying in 5 star hotels which is what I think you meant. EuropeanPete is probably interpreted it as the former - and 5* hotels in high cost of living cities usually run more like $700-1000/night for a standard room.

Either way, $200/night is pretty common in most mid to high cost cities in their urban cores. NYC, SFO, etc are more like $300+ a night for 3-4 star hotels. Mid-tier cities (think Chicago, Atlanta, etc) are more like $175-225. You have to be in cheap places to average less than $150 a night (unless you're staying at limited service properties). Prices can also vary a lot depending on what kind of corp codes you use.
