It also makes sense when you don't have status, since you still get a free non-alcoholic beverage, you still have access to IFE, you get a free personal item AND carry-on bag, the charge to check a bag on AA is lower, and, most importantly, on a route such as ORD-DFW, there are multiple flights a day rather than one, so you're less screwed in the case of irrops.

Speaking of ORD-DFW:

(1) Does anyone know the current going rate for seat assignments on ORD-DFW?
(2) Has anyone had any luck pre-boarding with a lap child while traveling on a BE ticket? I called last night and they said "no," but I'm wondering if I'd have better luck if I asked at the gate.
