It's my understanding that AMEX will give a retention offer on the SPG AMEX card every other year. I got one two years ago. Last year I was denied. I called today for this year. I was initially offered a lower interest rate for 9 months but I never carry a balance. I was offered 15K points to upgrade to the luxury card. I had no interest. I was transferred to a retention specialist. She spoke of new benefits such as the annual hotel certificate. She kept trying to get me to commit to keeping the card. I said I had yet to hear a retention offer. She eventually offered me 20K Marriott points after $2K spend in 3 months. I accepted. I used to have substantial spend on the card but then we lost Costco. And now we have a weak transfer ratio to Marriott. I've basically sock drawered the card since mid summer.
