I'm not sure I agree around upgrade gifting, surely as an elite you would trump a no status request anyway, as for the ability to confirm well in advance when travelling as a family under the same booking, that to me is one of the biggest perks.
It it fair that somebody with no status (or even Silver) could end up with an APD upgrade lodged by somebody else that would clear ahead of a RU lodged by a Gold? We don't know the definitive order or APD upgrades and how they're processed but it's safe to say they are well up the chart.
