True, but aircraft substitutions are not unusual even within 2 days of scheduled departure. My 763 was recently subbed for a 764 because of a mechanical delay 2 flights (15 hours) before mine.
yes, maintenance and other delays can cause an equipment swap. ORD is also notorious for changing equipment several times on the day of departure.
