I've been to the big island several times in the past year, all with National rental car. Aside from my free days, one thing that seems to be common is if you look too far ahead rates can actually be higher. Keep looking....sometimes I've found cheaper rates just 1-3 weeks before the rental dates.
Also remember Jan/Feb is whale watching season + if there are any holidays that draws lot of family for vacation those can jack up rates as well.
If you're staying right on Ali'i drive it is feasible to walk and do most things without needing a rental car.
Yeah, I ck once or twice a week. Will forgo the rental if rates stay high.
