Guess it just depends how close you want to be with your friend. If it's just a friend neither of us would care if we were together or not - we just pick whatever seat each of us wants. If it's a work friend where we might want to look at documents or have some brief discussions about work while enroute, we'd want to be right next to one another, not just across the aisle. Whatever floats your boat!
