There are many options
QF fly SYD-LAX-JFK (all QF metal)
QF fly SYD-DFW. Then AA DFW-IAD
DL, VA, AA & QF all fly SYD-LAX

The budget may be a problem.
You mention "one way are 7-8k each". What is the cost of a return?
