I got the same response when I called before applying but felt reassured from what I had read online. I received my card this week along with a separate letter that they had waived all fees.
Thanks for the data point. I'm going to hold off on applying until later this year with the hope that the signup bonus changes from two free nights to a boatload of Marriott points.
