The fare was 257 CAD (base fare) + 200 CAD (taxes) = 457 CAD for LAX-HKG [open-jaw] PEK-YUL.
LAX-HKG is booked into K bucket (NH codeshare flights) and PEK-YUL into G (United-operated flights).
I bought YUL-LAX (G-class) separately on a different PNR (actually I paid for YOW-LAX but ended up with YUL-LAX because of a schedule change).
Never had the occasion to reduce the price of this deal by doing West Coast-HKG instead of East Coast-China (HGH, etc.) neither. It is indeed quite strange that it works.
