Actually that is not obvious and I've often done it in the US where I can confirm a room with two double or 2 queen beds. I've not been tempted to try it in Europe where such rooms are scarce. I was never sure whether it would be an issue and I always explained the situation in the comments field and never had a problem.
but in the US you are normally not charged an additional fee for more than 1 person staying in the room so as many people as “allowed” can stay in the room with no change in $
