It is easier to find cheap business class to AMS or BRU (a train ride away) US-EU overnight route. You would have to be pretty lucky for your GPU to clear on that leg. But you can often find R at booking for the daytime return from one of those.. That is often what I do, as I am unwilling to waitlist. And if I was, I'd do it with miles so I could at least get the extra cash back if R class did not appear. I'd hate to pay hundreds extra for W and then not get the upgrade.
