This is now confirmed. For 2018 only, Marriott Gold via SPG gold will become new Platinum in August.

David Flueck explains what will happen in August to those those who have Gold status:
"So the members who have earned Gold on the Marriott side, they'll then get
Platinum."
"For members who have matched, they'll be getting then the
Gold status, which is really more equivalent to the SPG Gold status."
