Maybe the Marriott influence? There's usually a gap of at least a couple of weeks, an there are always complaints on FT about it with people screaming that they'll take their 500 nights a year and $500K spend elsewhere because of it.
I am not going to scream either way but for now will keep duplicate reservations in SPG and Hilton to decide later where to stay.
