Delta's Sky Clubs have been overcrowded for years. Many of the lounges simply aren't big enough. They really need separate lounges for international business-class passengers.
You're better off hanging out in the terminal concourse. At least there you can eat in a civilized manner at a restaurant.
DCA gets bad due to the high concentration of HVCs, and the limited terminal space. The real issue at that club is probably Amex Plat swipes, but DL can't start excepting certain clubs from that program (even though I wish they would at DCA). This is especially relevant now that DL offers D1 service from DCA.
They should block off a few tables at DCA for D1 customers, like Amex does at Centurion lounges for black card holders.
As much as it sucks, getting rid of all-airline access for membership holders will be essential once National Hall is moved airside.
