I've been researching elsewhere and you're exactly right. Any charge at a resort applies. The best part for me is that I go to Vegas 2-3 times per year and The Tropicana is listed as a resort. So, I will essentially get a free weekend if I combine the free night certificate with the $250 resort credit.
I have an upcoming stay at the Tropicana. They require a one night deposit which was charged to my card and immediately credited back against the resort credit.
