I've been a diamond for majority of years since 2000 and I can say with very few exceptions it gives hardly any extra tangible benefits in the United States. It does give faster point accrual and the 48 hour room guarantee, which even then does not work during periods of extraordinary demand. You are almost guaranteed to never get walked as a diamond as well, since the hotel must do a lot to make up for it. In the early days I've been a diamond, probably 2000-2007, upgrades at HGI's to their "2 room suite" was almost automatic. Now it happens maybe 25% of the time. I've never traveled internationally but from everything I've read as well, diamond's are treated royally especially in east Asia.
