We stayed in the 10th arrondissement, near the canal. It was sufficiently central for our needs as we had plenty of things around us and we were close to the Jacques Bonsergent Metro station so that we could explore the city easily.
I realize views may differ on this, but I think anywhere in 1-11 is going to be central enough to allow for easy exploration of the city. I wouldn't pass up the 12-20 either if there was a good deal on a nice condo close enough to a Metro/RER.
