If you purchased a ticket from AA, flight number is AA flight number (code share), operated by JL, then you will able to see your reservation details on JL website (including seat assignment) but you will not able to change seat assignment form JL website.

If you got an error message from JL website, then try:

JL flight number (i.e. JL 061) instead of AA 8407
If the trip is part of multi-segment trip, such as you are flying DEN-LAX on AA then connecting to LAX-NRT on JL, then put flight number of the first segment (i.e. in this example DEN-LAX flight) when look up for a reservation on JL website.
