I don't know - ultimately you were able to do the swap - they could have said no right off the bat.
And if they're going to spend the flight being pissy and passive aggressive about it, they should have said no.
But, as others said, why ask at all? Unless the seats are gender specific or first initial specific, who cares? Who would even know, unless they took an inordinate amount of attention to your family's boarding.
