Most of the above makes sense to me but I am not a lawyer.

What I did want to comment on is the DUI not being a 'minor misdemeanour'. Not to beat you up about your comment but to let you know that it is a serious enough offense that it does in fact make you ineligible for entry to Canada ( I don't know about other countries where it may also be the case).

It is quite common for someone to arrive in Canada and then discover that they are ineligible for entry because of that drunk driving conviction they had 8 years ago. What many people don't realize is that a criminal conviction follows you on your travels, not just where it happened.
