1998 is a long time ago. Aeroflot has not permitted smoking for many years, and on domestic Russian flights it was not allowed even in the 1990s. Interestingly, even in the 1980s there was no smoking allowed on Soviet trains, either—you had to stand outside, in between the cars, to smoke. Not much fun in wintertime!

The last flight I was on that allowed smoking was EgyptAir in, I believe, 2001. I’ve flown them many times since and there’s no smoking on their flights anymore either.
