It's not just a question of distance but also demand on the route. For example, I'm sitting on YYC-EWR right now and it's a 319, and has mostly been E90s for many years. It's a long enough flight that a widebody would be nice, but the demand just isn't there. Same things with some other fairly long routes like YYZ-SAN/SEA/PDX or YUL-SFO/LAX.

In some cases, there might be enough demand for a widebody, but the market prefers frequency. YVR-SFO and YYC-IAH being examples where AC and UA combined run 6+ narrowbody flights a day most days but where the variety of different departure times are preferred over having a nicer aircraft.
