Looking at the AA website for the Aviator Red...
Earn $3,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars when you spend $25,000 on purchases each calendar year
Earn a $100 American Airlines Flight Discount when you spend $30,000 or more in Purchases on your Account during your cardmembership year and your account remains open for at least 45 days after your anniversary date
I think that pretty clearly says calendar year so I do not think your strategy would work if your last dollar posts in January.
