The speeds are limited primarily by the satellites not the onboard equipment. Ku band is good for 70-100Mbps and is what Gogo/BA use. Ka band is used by a few airlines and is theoretically faster but it would require entirely new hardware.
Out of curiosity, how does that work? Clearly satellites can serve multiple connections at once, so surely (like with some laptops) couldn't a single aeroplane stack up multiple receivers? Obviously latency is limited by the satellite and technology, but speed usually not...
