I can't imagine IAH or HOU being cheap enough to justify the additional drive time (and traffic and larger airport etc).
SAT ia a worthy alternative because it is close enough. Is compare rental car costs at AUS vs SAT and see how much cheaper SAT might really be. I'd need at least $200 to bother. Otherwise I'd stick with AUS. But YMMV
