Yes the flexibility of being able to use it on almost any hotel is a huge plus, which is why I'm still kinda on the fence. I just recently got the Amex Plat, so I haven't really used FHR yet, but seeing that I can get an upgrade via FHR tips the scale a little bit, although I'm not sure how frequently you actually get a good upgrade.

IMHO, the strength here is the 4th night free on almost any hotel, and on discounted rates. I know everyone has different use cases, though. I used to use FHR quite a bit, but now with a little kid, the 4th night free at Disney World is a really strong benefit when the rate is 4-500 a night, and combineable with other offers. I went FHR -> Virtuoso -> Prestige 4th night, and I'm happiest with the Prestige.
Where I miss FHR, though, is with the frequent 3rd night free offers.
