With easyJet you can check in online for free from 30 days and up to two hours before your flight’s scheduled departure, from desktop or our mobile app

As far as a benefit? If you paid for a seat assignment, I can't think of one, at the moment, besides doing it at ticketing so you don't forget, because, if you check-in at the airport, it costs something like 40 Euros extra! .

If you don't pay extra for a seat choice, I know on RyanAir, there's a certain algorithm that their system uses to dole out seats at check-in. My last trip was SXF/BTS/SXF for 20 Euros all in! . I closely followed the online stories of how their system doles out seats at check-in, and I DID get either an aisle or window for both flights!
