I have to say after 4+ years as a VX Gold, this is very atypical. I'd agree some of the older bird have some seats with wear in them.
As for being recognized as a VX Gold, it rarely happened.
The best flight attendant I've ever had in 35+ years of flying is one of the really senior attendants on VX.
