I'm afraid the lines haven't gotten too much better, although they've hired some more SEF (immigration) officers.
Automated gates only work for EU/EEC on arrival, and should theoretically work for US citizens on departure if you've arrived through Portugal. However, given the flimsy chips in US passports there's a low probability of the gates working for you on departure.
