Although the "Detweiler" fire is largely contained (S. of Yosemite), I'd tend to avoid that area due to high heat.

Unless you two crave high temperatures, the immediate Bay Area is the place to be in mid-August. Nice places to go just outside of the Bay Area, include Monterey Peninsula and Carmel; and, subject to temperatures, the Sonoma or Napa Valleys (wine country).
If you two are into museums, there are several great ones right in S.F., including a major Edvard Munch exhibit at SF MOMA.
