I should check the availability of redemption flights ( guest seats or open ? ) in business , and if any seats are available for purchase with miles, I can then buy a saver or flexi economy ticket and then upgrade online. This is what you meant ?

2 - Choose the Departure, Destination, Dates. Choose the class of travel you wish to upgrade to
3- In the search results you are looking for "Guest Seat" availability
4- Before booking the flight. Use millage calculator to check the number of miles required for a particular booking class:

4a - Book your flight at
http://www.etihad.com/en-gb/ ensuring the booking class can be upgrades as per the mileage calcultor
5 - Wait for the ticket to be emailed. Normally within 10 minutes
6 - Then goto manage my booking and upgrade:
