Those street promoters...My answer is mostly no.

It is true that:

1. For the same award ticket, it will cost less using Avios rather than AM.

2. BAEC may have a better award inventory than AM itself (historically, it is easier to redeem CX tickets from partner rather than from CX's owned AM).

However:

1. There are only 2 cards that earn Avios in Hong Kong - Citi PremierMiles and Dah Sing BA Platinum Card. Dah Sing is actually a better card excluding the bonus, as Dah Sing has a better earning rate ($6 vs. $8) and no annual fee for at least 3 years.

AFAIK - Citi PremierMiles does not waive first-year annual fee.

2. Unlike AM (which you can earn from almost every card issuers in Hong Kong), there are only 2 cards that earn Avios in Hong Kong. It basically means that your option is pretty much limited.

percysmith, a FTer, is very knowledgeable in Hong Kong cards and very active in both FT and HongKongCard.com. You should talk to him and see what he thinks.
