Once you physically receive your Nexus card, you have to activate it before it is valid. Trying to use it at GE machines before you activate it may cause trouble.
My father tried using his newly received but not yet activated (he didn't realize he had to activate) card at a land crossing into the US and was detained in secondary for 3-4 hours while they tried to determine if he had stolen the card and verified his identity. It wasn't pleasant.
