We recently stayed at nearby Grand Wailea and friends have stayed at nearby 4S. That area is so lovely and a car rental isn't super needed - you can walk to various shopping malls for dining and groceries while enjoying the resort.
Maui has a lot to see but it's also easy to spend most of your time in the Wailea and Kihei part of Maui. 9 days is a great start. 2011 was my first time in Maui since the 80s and now I only want to go to Maui for annual holiday.
