Yes this is normal. Your account was credited for the night you stayed (earned). You should have discussed this with the hotel while on property and they may have been able to credit the 3 later night or allow you to use them on a future trip.

As I always suggest, talk with the property management , WHILE ON SITE, when unexpected situations or issues arise. It's easier to fix while on site than after the fact.

You can try calling the properly directly to see if they will credit or let you use later. That is your only option at this point.
